Now

Close the barbecue.
Close the sun.
Close the home-run games we won.

Close the picnic.
Close the pool.

Close the summer.

Open school.

Prince Redcloud

Open

Open the noisy park to play.
Open the noisy door to let us in.
Open the painting paper to let us paint.
Open the big chalkboard to write.
Open the big door that kids slam.
Open the yellow bus to let us ride in.

Close the summer.

Pheng Yang (age 7)

Pattern writing idea >>> The students chant and read Prince Redcloud's Now poem. Then they develop a word bank of things that 'closed' for them with the end of summer. They are then modeled and follow with writing their own version of Close the ..., Close the ..., etc. The next lesson would be developing a word bank with things that have opened with school. We would then write Open the ..., Open the ..., etc. We would then develop an adjective word bank and our next writing will include adjectives. A further extension would be prepositional phrases.
