Maps Local
Go to Mapquest and click on Driving Directions. Type in your home address and the address of your school or after school program location (to determine the address of the school, have the students 'research the address'). This starts with a discussion where they could find this information and listing the possibilities. Print the map and paste in their individual Idea Books. What kind of things could they observe for when using the map when they go home or come to school?
Idea Book Idea
Paste things in their Idea Book they find on the way home or to school using the map to mark the location of the discovery. What could they do with this information? What kind of data could they compile? How could they share this with children and youth at another location?
Worldwide
Another interesting map site to visit is the Map Machine at National Geographic. What kind of information could children (and adults) discover and compile while zooming about the world? How could they use the Map Key and other facts?
Interesting Website to See and Hear

move the mouse around
To save a map you get on Mapquest put the mouse arrow on the map and hold down the mouse clicker and select 'Save this image'. Once saved the map can be adjusted in programs like Kidpix, Photodeluxe or Photoshop.
